2022-2023 ACADEMIC YEAR’S ADMISSION AT THE OFFINSO COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IN A STEADY PROGRESS https://www.ofce.edu.gh/2022/12/28/2022-2023-academic-years-admission-at-the-offinso-college-of-education-in-a-steady-progress/ https://www.ofce.edu.gh/2022/12/28/2022-2023-academic-years-admission-at-the-offinso-college-of-education-in-a-steady-progress/#respond Wed, 28 Dec 2022 17:45:13 +0000 https://www.ofce.edu.gh/?p=1573 Just as it happens in any other tertiary institution, the admission of new students is an annual ritual that keeps the respective institutions going. Offinso College of Education began admitting her selected applicants on Monday, 19th December 2022.

Selected applicants going through the admission process

The whole process is expected to last for about a month or less.

According to the officers put in charge of the admission process, so far the process has been very calm and smooth, with very minimal pressure on them as compared to that of the 2021–2022 academic year’s admission.

Mr. Kwaako Agyemang, the officer in charge of the first desk for the registration process

Mr. Daniel Aning Kusi, the IT officer responsible for data entry

Applicants that have been given the scarce opportunity of being enlisted or selected due to the competitive nature of the selection could not hide their joy.

Selected applicants happily go through the admission process

Talatu Mahmoud enthusiastically poured out heart her emotions, “I am so much happy and relieved, all due to the fact that I have been granted admission into this national admirable College of Education…” She adds, “..Since my senior high school days, I have really yearned to be here, at Offinso College of Education. Praise be to Allah that my prayer has been answered today, Wednesday, 28th December 2022.”

Talatu Mahmoud, a selected female applicant

All fresh teacher trainees admitted to the college are expected to report to school on Monday, January 23, 2023.

WRITING A WINNING GRANT RESEARCH PROPOSAL – THE OFFINSO COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (OFCE) CONTINUES TO BUILD THE CAPACITY OF ITS ACADEMIC STAFF https://www.ofce.edu.gh/2022/12/28/writing-a-winning-grant-research-proposal-the-offinso-college-of-education-ofce-continues-to-build-the-capacity-of-its-academic-staff/ https://www.ofce.edu.gh/2022/12/28/writing-a-winning-grant-research-proposal-the-offinso-college-of-education-ofce-continues-to-build-the-capacity-of-its-academic-staff/#respond Wed, 28 Dec 2022 10:56:16 +0000 https://www.ofce.edu.gh/?p=1562 Globally, research plays a pivotal role in the effective structural transformation of the socio-economic environment. Offinso College of Education (OFCE), being a tertiary institution, therefore has a role to fulfill in this respect. In achieving this, the college continues to build the capacity of its staff members to maximise their research contribution.

A section of the participants being attentive to the facilitator

As it frequently occurs, the college has once again organised a two-day workshop, 21st- 22nd December 2022 for the academic staff. It was facilitated by Prof. Isaac Boateng, the Dean of Faculty of Business Education (FBE) of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) and a council member of the Offinso College of
Education.

Prof. Isaac Boateng, the facilitator

The objective of the workshop was to give participants an opportunity to practise principles of good written communication as they apply to research proposals and to help them gain insight into how peer review decision-making panels assess and evaluate research proposals.

The College Principal, Very Rev. Joseph Nkyi Asamoah (in white) keenly following the presentation

As part of the programme, members were assigned to groups of two, three, or four, and each group was tasked with writing a proposal with the aim of attracting a grant. To do this, they were to choose a research topic that interested them, give a brief background, a statement of the problem, the aims and objectives of the study, an impact statement, methodology, a work schedule, and an ethics and risk assessment.

Participants working in groups two, three and four

Participants were very much enthused to have had the privilege of participating in such a workshop organised by the college. Like Napoleon, they called for more.

Participant, Mr. Benjamin Kwabena Ochour, expressing his appreciation of the workshop

The substantive Chair, Rt. Rev. Stephen Kwaku Owusu, who is also the Kumasi Diocesan Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana directed the meeting. At the meeting, among issues that found their way as part of the agenda was whether or not the tenure of the current College Principal should be renewed.

The College Principal was first appointed on 1st November 2018 to stair the affairs of the college. Hence, his first term of office shall be due on 31st October 2022 which is why it formed part of the agenda of the just organised College Council meeting.

The College Council, upon extensive deliberation on the motion unanimously resolved that the current College Principal, Very Rev. Joseph Nkyi Asamoah be allowed to continue to occupy the seat of the College Principal of this noble institution. Very instrumental in his reappointment is the College Council’s considered view that the Principal has remarkably improved the physical infrastructure and academic performance of students of the college within the years (2018-2022) under review. The College Council was genuinely impressed with the performance and leadership of the College Principal, Very Rev. Joseph Nkyi Asamoah. As part of this report is the list of some developmental projects carried out under the watch of the College Principal.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROJECT(S) COVERING THE PERIOD OF 2018/2019 ACADEMIC YEAR TO DATE

A. GETFund Funded projects

  1. The government has constructed for and handed over a 2000-seater capacity auditorium to the college.
  2. Construction of a modern lecture hall and ICT complex which was initiated in 2016 has stalled.
  3. A 300-bed capacity hostel facility has also commenced and it is steadily on-going. It is hoped to be completed in fifteen (15) months’ time.

B. Internally Generated Fund (IGF) funded projects (Kindly refer to the appendix for pictorial evidence):

  1. Acquisition of one thousand (1000) conference chairs for the college auditorium to solve the problem of using the dining hall over the years as a venue for other college gatherings and also saving the college from using huge sums of money to rent chairs from the outside for big gatherings such as congregations, matriculations, etc.
  2. The college also refurbished lecture halls with 500 modern tables and chairs to improve teaching and learning.
  3. Palm kennel stove was also installed at the college kitchen to bring a relief to the cooks by saving them from smoke inhalation which is a health hazard.  Additionally, dining hall tables and benches were procured to meet the increasing number of students.
  4. The college also installed maize mill, flour mill and tomato mill for domestic use in order to reduce the high cost of payment at commercial rate.
  5. The sick bay to the college has also been renovated and well-resourced. Currently, it provides the basic health needs of the entire college community. In collaboration with the Offinso South Municipal Health Directorate, the facility is now NHIS accredited and it is managed by a Physician Assistant and a nurse.
  6. With the exception of the outer lanes of the college, most part of the college have been laid with pavement blocks now.
  7. The new Principal’s bungalow’s construction is finished and furnished. The Principal currently resides there.
  8. At the Male Students’ Hall, 24-seat KVIP washrooms have been renovated and replaced with W.C.
  9. To ease the strain on student housing, a historic dormitory block with a capacity of 120 beds has once more undergone refurbishment.
  10. The construction of the college fence started earlier in 2021 and is still ongoing. It has now reached a total length of five hundred and fifty (550) meters. Thus, 300 meters on the frontage and 250 meters on the Ampabame end of the college. Meanwhile, it has significantly increased security within the college, as intended.
  11. The college’s new entrance, the construction of which began in February 2022, is now complete. The Kumasi Diocesan Bishop and now, the Chair for this Governing Council, Rt. Rev. Stephen K. Owusu, and the Principal, Very Rev. Joseph Nkyi Asamoah, cut the sod in that regard on February 8, 2022. For the moment, pavement of the pedestrian walkway from the entrance leading to inner part of the college is in progress.
  12. Additionally, the college’s staff common room has undergone a comprehensive renovation with new swivel seats (enough for the entire staff), installed air conditioners, and curtains.
  13. The administration building, college library, dining hall, lecture halls, male halls and the SRC secretariat have all had their outside paintwork replaced.
  14. Moreover, some college departments have received supplies such as office desks, chairs, computers, printers, curtains and cabinets.
  15. More so, additional borehole has been drilled for the college bringing the total number of boreholes to seven (7).
  16. The college has also bought two (2) tractor mowers, two (2) slashers and two (2) lawn mowers to make our landscaping tasks easier and more convenient.
  17. The college leveled and re-grassed the college football field; constructed a concrete oval around it, and created two (2) concrete volleyball courts as well as a concrete handball court to an appreciable standard in order to enhance college sporting activities.
  18. The administration block annex was maintained by way of tiling the base of the building as the building showed a sign of water adsorption at the base.
  19. Last but not least, the college has created a website with the domain name www.ofce.edu.gh in order to close the communication gap with stakeholders.

Mr. Augustine Adjei, the Dean of Students Affairs, expressed his happiness with the students’ success and urged them to put in extra effort to win more accolades of this nature.

At a colourful and well-attended ceremony which was graced by most of the Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff of the College, the Executives of the Students’ Representative Council and students from Level 100 and 200 who are currently in the College.

The Principal of the College, Very Reverend Joseph Nkyi-Asamoah whose initiative brought the idea or philosophy into reality, in his speech, advised the students to take their studies serious.

He explained that the rationale behind the introduction of the Excellence Awards Ceremony is to primarily motivate all students of the College to work harder so that they could also enjoy the same or similar awards in the coming semesters. This initiative is to motivate all students to work harder so that they could also enjoy the same or similar awards in the coming semesters.

He was also of the firm belief that the Awards initiative would go a long way to raise the corporate image of Offinso College as the College of choice and one the best colleges in the country.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Mr Augustine Adjei urged the students to see the Awards Scheme as reinforcement and advised them accordingly to sit up so as to improve upon their performance and also be part of the awardees.

The Academic Affairs Officer of the College, Mr Jonathan Kwame Mensah, on his part, advised the students not to look down on the subjects that they are not interested in but they should rather work harder in those subjects as they could raise their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

On his part, a tutor and former Head of Education Department, Mr. Samuel Nti-Adarkwah presented a cheque of one thousand, five hundred Ghana Cedis (1500) to the overall best student whose GPA stood at 3.97.

Reverend Peter Reindorf Okyere of Mathematics and Science Department also assured the best three students that in the event that they could maintain their GPA, (so that they do not fall below 3.8) till they complete the College, he would give each of them four hundred (400) Ghana Cedis.

In another development, the former HOD of Mathematics/ICT Department, Mr. Opoku Agyemang awarded all members of his department some valuable items as his gesture. According to him, the efforts of the members of the department helped the students to raise their GPAs.

The Quality Assurance Officer of the College, Mr. Francis Boateng assured the students that he would do all he can to ensure that standards are improved in the College.

The overall best performing student was Eugene Atta Boakye Junior whose CGPA stood at 3.97. He was followed by Ransford Kankam Okyere whose CGPA was 3.93 and was also followed by Francis Dankwah Faith Obrempong whose CGPA got to 3.91.
